Fall 2018 Dean's List Announced
A total of 1,513 students have been named to the Dean's List at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU) for the Fall 2018 semester of the 2018-2019 academic year, according to Joanne Bruno, J.D., provost and vice president for academic affairs. Students eligible for the Dean's List are those who have attained a 3.50 quality point average or better and are enrolled full-time. The letter grade "B" earns 3 quality points per credit, and the grade "A" earns 4 quality points per credit.

Following a 9-1 regular season, the Muhlenberg football team received an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Championships. The Mules will play their first-round game at Delaware Valley on Saturday, November 17, at noon.

Wilkes University Students Inducted Into Full Membership of Tri Beta National Biology Honor Society
Thirteen Wilkes University students were inducted as full members into the Theta Delta Chapter of the Beta Beta Beta national biological honor society during an induction ceremony held during the fall 2018 semester. Full members are juniors or seniors who have completed at least 16 credits in biology with at least a 3.25 grade point average and a 3.0 overall GPA. Beta Beta Beta was founded in 1922 at Oklahoma City University by Dr. Frank G. Brooks and his students. The idea of an honor society and professional society for biology students spread and by 1925 the society became a national organization. The Theta Delta Chapter was installed at Wilkes in 2001.

Kutztown University has conferred degrees on more than 1,225 students during the winter and spring semesters. Kutztown University announces degree conferment twice a year, once in the winter and once in the summer. Commencement exercises are held in May and December; however, students finish the requirements for graduation throughout the entire year. The cumulative grade point average necessary for honor distinction is: with honor (cum laude) 3.40; with high honor (magna cum laude) 3.60 and with highest honor (summa cum laude) 3.80.

The University of Scranton conferred nearly 600 master's and doctoral degrees at its graduate commencement ceremony on May 26 in the Byron Recreation Complex. Graduates recognized at the ceremony include those who completed their degree requirements in August and December of 2017, as well as January and May of 2018.

University of Scranton Undergraduate Commencement
The University of Scranton conferred more than 890 bachelor's and associate's degrees at its undergraduate commencement on May 27 at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre. Very Reverend Timothy P. Kesicki, S.J., president of the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States, read the remarks of the principal speaker Most Reverend George V. Murry, S.J., Bishop of the Diocese of Youngstown, who was unable to attend the ceremony in person because he is undergoing treatment for a form of acute leukemia. Both Father Kesicki and Bishop Murry, in absentia, received honorary degrees from the University. Honorary degrees were also presented to Sister Ann Walsh, I.H.M., former CEO and current assistant director of Friends of the Poor; William Whitaker, founding president of the Washington Jesuit Academy, Washington. D.C.; and Cecelia Lynett Haggerty, Times-Shamrock Communications and former University trustee.

ESU Student Voted to Active Minds Board of Directors
East Stroudsburg University student Raquel Sosa has been elected president of the Student Advisory Committee (SAC) of Active Minds, Inc. Sosa, a junior majoring in psychology from Wilkes-Barre, Pa., is also president of ESU's chapter of Active Minds. Active Minds, Inc. is a national nonprofit organization that empowers students to speak openly about mental health and combats stigma surrounding mental illness through different events and program initiatives. The SAC is comprised of 20 student leaders from the entire Active Minds chapter network of over 400 chapters. The SAC's primary role is to contribute the student voice to Active Minds' efforts and to advise national staff in the areas of student engagement, fundraising, program planning, and promotion. As the SAC president, Sosa will sit on the board of directors for the national organization and attend and participate in board meetings in Washington, D.C.

Biology Honor Society Induction
University of Scranton students inducted into Beta Beta Beta, the national honor society for biology. For induction into the honor society, students must have completed at least three biology courses, maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average in biology, and be in good academic standing at the University. The honor society encourages undergraduate biological research through presentations at conventions, publication in the journal BIOS, and research/travel grants. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 1994.

Students and Faculty Participate in Pennsylvania College English Association Conference
East Stroudsburg University was well represented at the Pennsylvania College English Association (PCEA) 2018 Conference held at Hotel Bethlehem March 23-24. Three ESU students and six faculty members participated in the two-day conference by presenting papers or serving on a panel related to the conference theme, "Rise Up: Social Protest in Literature, Creative Writing, and Pedagogy."

Counseling Honor Society Induction
University of Scranton students inducted into Chi Delta Rho, the University's chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, the international honor society for counseling. The international honor society was established in 1985 to recognize outstanding achievement and service within the profession of counseling. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 1994.
